Alberta Coalition for Watershed Security
Shared strength. Informed Action. Watershed Security.

Watershed security in Alberta means honouring water as the source of life, culture and resilience. It is the foundation of thriving communities and economies, and it calls us to work together — across governments, sectors and cultures — to safeguard the rivers, lakes and wetlands that sustain us all.
The Alberta Coalition for Watershed Security is working to restore and protect Alberta’s watersheds through coordinated advocacy, capacity-building and long-term systems change.

Why this work matters
Water sustains our communities, supports local economies, underpins agriculture and industry and nurtures ecosystems. At the same time, our watersheds face increasing demands from population growth, land and resource development, and changing climate conditions, contributing to floods, droughts and wildfires that have cost over $4 billion since 2020. These challenges affect not only water security, but also the forests, fish, wildlife and food systems that support quality of life, livelihoods and cultural traditions across the province.
Investments in watershed and nature-based solutions are essential to reduce risks, safeguard water security and protect the foundations of Alberta’s prosperity, health, and survival. Yet funding for this work is uncertain and inconsistent. A coordinated coalition strengthens collaboration, provides credibility, amplifies diverse voices, and builds the case for maintaining and growing long-term investment in healthy watersheds that support people, the economy, and nature for generations to come.
The Alberta Coalition for Watershed Security respectfully acknowledges that our work takes place across Treaty 6, Treaty 7 and Treaty 8 territories, the traditional homelands of First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples. We recognize that water holds deep cultural, spiritual and practical significance for Indigenous Peoples, and that their knowledge, leadership and rights must guide any work on watershed health. As a coalition, we are in the early stages of this journey — listening, learning and creating space for Indigenous Nations and communities to shape their involvement in ways that reflect their values, priorities and consent.
